  The Ancients associated a day with each "planet" they knew of and in the Middle Ages, the alchemists, aware of only 7 metals linked these to the planets as well.

  1. The words in brackets are the French words for the days with which there is a better modern connection. Most of the English days were names after Norse gods, who were worshipped by the Anglo-Saxons before their conversion to Christianity.
  2. The metal quicksilver has now taken the name of the planet that was assigned to it; mercury.
